How to find a salon or barber in Lusaka you can trust

Braids that last, a fair price agreed upfront and a stylist who keeps time. Here is how to find that salon in Lusaka before you sit in the chair.

Most people in Lusaka find a salon the same way: a friend's braids look good, so you ask who did them. Word of mouth still works, but it only tells you about one visit. Reviews from many customers tell you what usually happens, and that is what you are really paying for.

Here is how to choose a salon or barber in Lusaka without wasting a Saturday or your money.

Start with the reviews, but read them properly

A high score is a good start, but how a salon got it matters more.

  • Look at the number of reviews, not just the stars. A salon with 4.4 from 60 reviews is a safer bet than one with 5.0 from three. On ZedReviews the ZedScore already allows for this, so a new salon with a few perfect reviews can't jump above one that has pleased customers for years.
  • Read the 2 and 3-star reviews first. They tell you what goes wrong on a bad day. "Took longer than they said" is very different from "my hair started breaking a week later".
  • Look for the same words coming up again. If several people mention lateness, it is not bad luck. If several mention that the braids lasted, believe them.
  • Check the dates. A salon that was great two years ago may have different stylists now. Recent reviews count more.
  • See how the owner replies. A polite reply that offers to fix a problem is a very good sign. No replies at all, or angry ones, tells you how you will be treated if something goes wrong.

You can see every salon and barber with reviews in the Lusaka salon rankings, sorted by ZedScore and updated every day.

Ask these questions on WhatsApp before you book

A good salon will happily answer on WhatsApp. If they ignore simple questions now, imagine the day you have a complaint.

  1. What is the full price, including hair? Ask if the price is for the style only or includes the extensions, and which brand. Most arguments at the end of an appointment are about this.
  2. How long will it take? Knotless braids and long styles can take most of the day. Ask so you can plan, and so you can tell if they are rushing.
  3. Who will do my hair? If you liked a particular stylist's work, ask for them by name.
  4. Do I need a deposit, and how do I pay it? Paying a small deposit by mobile money to hold a slot is normal. Make sure the name that shows when you send it matches the salon or the person you are speaking to.
  5. What happens if I'm not happy? Many good salons will redo a section for free in the first few days.

Screenshot the price they give you. It saves a lot of trouble later.

Warning signs

  • The price changes once you are already in the chair.
  • They refuse to tell you the price of the hair before you come.
  • Pain, burning or very tight braids are dismissed as "normal". Tension that gives you headaches or bumps on the scalp can damage your hairline.
  • Tools that look dirty, or the same towel used on everyone.
  • They ask you to send the full amount upfront for a first visit, to a number with a different name.

For barbers: it is about consistency

With barbers, the question is less "can they do a good cut" and more "will it be good every time". Reviews that say "I have been going for two years" are worth more than one excited review after a first visit. Also check whether they clean clippers between customers. Many good barbershops do it where you can see.

Where to look in Lusaka

There are good salons and barbers all over the city, from Kabulonga, Woodlands and Rhodes Park to Chelston, Kalingalinga, Matero and the shops near Cairo Road and Kamwala. Busy areas are not always better. Some of the best-reviewed salons are small places that live on regular customers.

Use the area filter on the Lusaka rankings to find one near you, or search by name.

After your appointment, leave a review

It takes a minute, you can type it or record a voice note, and you don't need an account. Say what you had done, how long it took, whether the price matched what you were told and how your hair looks a week later. That is exactly what the next person wants to know.

If you own a salon, claim your free page to reply to reviews and ask happy customers to review you on WhatsApp.
