Choosing a lodge in Ndola or Kitwe for a work trip

Reliable power, hot water, Wi-Fi that works and a safe place to park. What to check before you book a lodge or guesthouse on the Copperbelt, and how to read the reviews.

Thousands of people travel to the Copperbelt for work every week: to the mines and their suppliers, government offices, banks, workshops and conferences. Most stay in lodges and guesthouses rather than big hotels, and the choice in Ndola and Kitwe is wide.

The photos online always look good. What you really need to know is what the stay is like on an ordinary Tuesday night. That is where guest reviews help.

The five things that matter most on a work trip

1. Power

Ask directly: "Do you have a generator, solar or inverter backup, and what does it run?" Some backup only powers the lights. If you need to charge a laptop, run an iron or use air conditioning during load-shedding, you need to know before you arrive. Guests mention this in reviews more than almost anything else.

2. Water

Ask whether they have a water tank or borehole, and whether there is hot water all day. A cold shower before an early meeting is a common complaint.

3. Wi-Fi

"Free Wi-Fi" can mean anything. Ask whether it works in the rooms or only at reception, and whether it is fast enough for video calls. Read recent reviews: Wi-Fi changes often.

4. Parking and security

If you are driving, ask whether parking is inside a secure yard and whether there is a night guard. Check reviews for any mention of break-ins or problems.

5. Food

Many lodges serve breakfast; fewer serve dinner. If you are working late, ask whether the kitchen is open in the evening, or whether there are places to eat nearby.

How to read lodge reviews

  • Trust specific reviews over general ones. "Great place!" tells you little. "Generator came on within a minute during load-shedding and hot water every morning" tells you a lot.
  • Look at who wrote them. Reviews from other business travellers who stayed several nights are the most useful for a work trip.
  • Check how recent they are. A lodge can change quickly with new management.
  • Read the replies. A manager who responds to a complaint about noise or cleaning, and says what they changed, runs a place that cares.

Booking and paying

  1. Get the rate in writing, on WhatsApp or email, including whether breakfast is included.
  2. Ask about invoices. If your company is paying, check that the lodge can give a proper invoice or receipt with its details. Many can't, and it causes problems with claims later.
  3. Ask how to pay. Card, bank transfer and mobile money are all common. If you pay a deposit by mobile money, check the name shown before you confirm matches the lodge.
  4. Ask about cancellation. Work trips change. Know what happens if yours does.

Ndola or Kitwe?

It depends on where your work is. Ndola is the provincial capital, with many government offices and the main airport for the Copperbelt. Kitwe is the largest town and close to many mining operations. If you are working in Chingola, Chililabombwe or Mufulira, check lodges across the Copperbelt as well. Staying closer to your work can save a lot of time on the road each day.

After your stay

Business travellers are some of the most useful reviewers, because they compare many places. A short review about power, water, Wi-Fi and the welcome takes a minute and helps the next person who has an early meeting.
